The Editor and Writer

Graphic prints and bold colors work well together and the same goes for me and my husband. We have many things in common but one of the many passions that we share is, fashion. I find that having a shared love for each other isn't always enough, to keep both parties sane and sustained within a marriage. It takes two for sure but sometimes you need that extra something to remind you why you love your significant other. For us fashion is our common denominator, if ever we are mad at one another or even walking different paths, fashion is one of the topics that hones us both in and back to one accord. We have endless conversations about what we are wearing, wishlist and the latest trends. In fact I use my husband as muse often to explore my stylist dreams and experiment with visions I have for a client. He also gives me sound honest advice when my mind clutters of all things that glitter.  I guess he is the Editor and I'm the Writer, together we aren't too bad as a team.

Golden Globes Best Dressed

I have to start with the bad news first, I was sorely disappointed with most of the looks that debuted on the red carpet this year. The main reason is, there were no risks taken, by most of these A list stars. In other words, I was left wanting, by many. However some did take the proverbial dive off of the cliff and some remained consistent stunning, never deviating from their accustomed stylish and elegant savoir-faire. Now lets get too it, Best dressed has to go to my girl, Lupita Nyong’o, as she slayed the red carpet in this stunning look by  Ralph Lauren Collection. I'd like to point out, as a testament to her true beauty, that girlfriend did not even wear much jewelry or many accessories.  She donned  a sharply cut hit-top fade, loved it! She wore Fred Leighton diamond studs, a diamond and 18K gold ring, and cushion cut diamond ring; Rich Kosann clutch; Paul Andrew heels. The runner up has to go to the handsome man of the hour, my boy crush in the nineties series, My So Called Life, Jared Leto. He gave us this elegant hair, a cross between a ponytail and a bun, while looking oh so sleek in a  Saint Laurent suit. Others who made my list included, Kerry Washington, wearing Balenciaga, customized by Alexander Wang, and  Olivia Wilde wearing Gucci.

Jeremy Scott for Moschino Prefall

Jeremy Scott, an LA based designer, known for his kitschy designs and innovative immersion of pop culture and fashion, was named the creative director of the Moschino design house back in October of last year. Well, he has released some of  his first looks for the Moschino Pre-Fall collection and although the jury is still out, for me its a home run!! I would even go so far as saying that this is a match made in fashion heaven. His ability to generate designs that are crazy and iconic has proven success, with his collaboration with Adidas and the advent of the "wings" sneaker. Somehow he has done it again, marrying iconic imagery and concepts such as  labels and transforming them into these beautiful yet strong iconic looks, will definitely elevate the Moschino design house to its former glory. But don't take my word for it, take a peak below.

New Year, New You or nah?

The New Year is in full stride on day 3 of 365! Oh in the beginning, we set high hopes for ourselves for a new outlook, on anything from our career, health, and even financial goals. In style and fashion your goals should start from within, and by that I mean don't run to the store, open your closet doors, drawers and start auditing as if you were the IRS. Just like tax season, this may seem like an overwhelming task at first glance. If you find you don't have the time or skills to pull this off just ask me! Styled for You, offers closet auditing services at a reasonable price and we will work with most budgets.

However, just like breaking even or getting a refund on your tax return, completing a full audit of your closet will provide a great reward.  By honing your clothing, shoes and accessories you will create a foundation upon which you can build and express your personal style. Too many choices can leave you feeling overwhelmed and with nothing to wear. Start by asking yourself: What do you wear? How often do you wear it?

Pull out your 5-10 wardrobe staples. This can be a mix of work and casual and dressy. If you’re feeling stuck, start with a couple pairs of pants, 2 dresses, 2 jackets, 2 skirts, 2 blouses. Then look at scarves, vests, shoes and jewelry and do the same. Put together at least 6 different outfits – 2 dressy, 2 business, and 2 casual and take pictures so you’ll remember them.

If you’re having trouble finding outfits using those staples, what do you need to fill in? Make a list.
Separate out all the clothing and accessories that you haven’t worn in a year or more. Be ruthless no matter how attached you are! At the end of the day it’s just clothing, right? If you haven’t worn it in a year or more, there’s a reason. No occasion? Doesn’t fit? Doesn’t matter. Put it in a pile.

What’s your lifestyle? Do you travel a lot? If so, and you have a closet full of clothes that wrinkle, you may want to rethink your fabric choices. Frequent travel calls for interchangeable, hand washable clothing when you may not have access to a washer/dryer. Things that can be dressed up and dressed down. Look for lightweight wrinkle-free pieces that you can roll up, take up little space and are easily accessorized.

Once you get out all the things you haven’t worn in a year, what’s left?

Sort your clothing into three piles – casual, business and dressy. You probably still have some more downsizing to do. Do you find you have a preponderance of jeans in multiple sizes? What do you really wear? What do you need? Think in twos – there’s only so much room in Noah’s Ark. Having trouble deciding among those ten pairs of jeans? Ask your best friend to be brutally honest. (Yes, those jeans with the sequined back patch pockets with the buttoned down flaps really do make you look dated. lol) Pare down. You will be surprised at how happy you are when you own less. Remember you don’t own your possessions, they own you.

So here’s your challenge. Clean out your closet!  How much can you get rid of? Was this a successful approach? Pass along some of your unused items and share your paring down tips in the comment box below!

Tip 1: Edit often and set a cut-off date.
